Bathukamma Celebrations

The end of the 1st term at school is always special as it culminates magnificently with the Dusshera period. Children and adults look forward to the eventful days of Navaratri in the form of song, dance, and special food that is associated with it. In Telangana, the Dusshera celebrations manifest in the form of the festival of Bathukamma.

The Bathukamma festival is the cultural spirit of Telangana that has medieval origins. The word itself means “Mother Goddess come alive”. It is symbolically presented by a beautiful flower stack that consists of mostly medicinal flowers. The stack comprises of seven concentric layers taking the shape of a temple gopuram.

This year, the pre-primary section of Unicent school along with the children of grade 1 and 2 celebrated Bathukamma in conjunction with their last working. It was done with great pomp and show. Children did the Ganesha Vandanam, sang slokas and danced the special “Bathukamma dance”. A lot of work went into the preparation. Students practiced and rehearsed many times, and teachers helped them make the tower shaped Bathukammas and in the preparation of the prasadams that was distributed at the end of the celebration.

This festival especially, time and again, reminds us that “The greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals”. Click here to view the pics
